SEMH Secondary
Horsham, West Sussex

Are you passionate about unlocking potential and inspiring creativity?

Would you like to make a real difference to some of society’s most vulnerable teens?

Are you a Design Technology (Resistant Materials) specialist?

Sussex Teachers are working with a small independent special school for boys with behavioural difficulties to find a Design Technology (Resistent Materials) Teacher for an immediate   or September 2020 start.

Working in a very small SEN secondary on the outskirts of Horsham you will be teaching boys who have complex needs associated with sexually inappropriate behaviour. The teenagers are aged between 12 and 18 years and live in the care home that is attached to the school site. All students have a range of Social Emotional and Mental Health difficulties and all have an EHCP, some students also have learning difficulties. The school has been graded Outstanding by Ofsted continuously since November 2013, with the last inspection in November 2017.

Teaching no more than six students at a time you will plan and deliver a broad D&T curriculum in order to motivate pupils of all abilities. Working in a purpose-built and modern specialist Art and Design classroom, you will teach the practical subject of Design Tech and vocational skills. Setting achievable goals with clear and safe boundaries you will motivate your students to create and design products using a variety of mediums.

You do not need to be an expert in trauma, neglect or abuse as you will supported by a talented and experienced therapy team who will be able to assist and coach you in how to best deal with the complex needs of your pupils. Ideally, you will have had some experience working with students with SEMH needs, (either in mainstream or special settings) and will be passionate about helping the most vulnerable to succeed. You will hold either QTS or QTLS and have specialised in teaching Design Technology, with NQTs and experienced teachers both welcome to apply.

You will be joining a highly successful team and will be supported by expert therapists, social workers and experienced teachings assistants who will be on hand to offer support when dealing with the specialist needs of the boys you will be working with. Working in purpose built and well-equipped classrooms, your new workplace is an inspiring and exciting environment in which to work in. You will be invited to attend high-quality in-house training to develop your knowledge and understanding of SEMH needs and how best to support the pupils in your care.
