Sussex Teachers are working with a newly established SEND/SEMH Free School in Hastings, East Sussex to find an experienced SEN specialist to join their team ASAP. In this full-time teaching role you will be working with a year 5/6 class with social, emotional and mental health needs and Autism.

You will be working in an innovative and pioneering school for children with neuro-diverse profiles, including ASD and social emotional and mental health needs, who have the capacity to meet age related expectations. The school opened in September 2021 initially with 24 KS2/KS3 pupils, three classes, in the first year. The school will grow in staff and pupils, rising over 4 years to 72 places; pupils will range from year 3 to year 11. The Class is small consisting of 8 pupils with 1 teacher and 1 teaching assistant per class. 

You will teach flexibly in a cross-curricular approach as well as in subject specific lessons following, initially, a primary model. Subjects to be taught are: English. Maths, Science, Humanities, PSHE, PE, Art & Design Technology. The school caters to young people that have been unable to access mainstream provisions, whether this was due to the complexity of needs, their level of risk in larger settings or their difficulties engaging in a larger school environment. Many learners display challenging behaviour and have complex learning needs.

We are looking for someone who is dedicated to improving pupil’s outcomes and who views every student as an individual with the potential to succeed. To be eligible for this position it is essential that you have Qualified Teacher Status and hold experience working with young people with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. You should hold high expectations for your pupils and be able to confidently assess their progress using the schools inhouse framework. You should then use this to inform your own planning and target setting to provide precisely the right level of challenge, including for the most able pupils. It is important that you have excellent communication and relationship skills and are able to maintain good working relationships with colleagues, young people (and their families) as well as other professional organisations.

This is a Long-Term Supply position until the end of the academic year with the possibility of becoming a Permanent job and is an excellent opportunity to work in a specialist school with an innovative approach to education.
